The Beauty in Buildings
Capstone Project
The purpose of the project is to illuminate the art that is architecture by capturing the emotions elicited by building around College Park in physical pen and ink drawings. Being able to appreciate the beauty of architecture can make simple things like walking to class feel like going to an art exhibit. Further significance comes through understanding why one has certain emotional responses to buildings and understanding why buildings are designed a certain way. Both are really helpful in understanding oneself and the world as a whole. The target audience is local people who have seen the buildings in person, and who may understand the emotional response of being at the physical building, but the project does also seek to highlight the beauty of architecture to anyone who previously did not value it. Research methods used include archival research into the history of buildings in the area and artistic methods include capturing the shading and proportions of the subject. The desired impact on the audience is to experience some kind of emotional response from looking at the final pieces and to allow them to leave having challenged their ideas about architecture as an art form.
